Sounds like a bad cd. Try cleaning it, and if that doesn't work exchange it.

May be a case of bad memory (ram).
I would run a test of your memory. He is a free program(s) you can use.
Microsoft has one - http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
but I perfer Memtest86+ - http://www.memtest.org/

If they were created cd's, example take your orginal xp cd and intergated a service pack in to it may want to recreate that disc again. If they are the orginal do what Hockster says and get them exchanged. If it still fails may be hard drive troubles or optical drive failure.

As long as you have an XP cd with no service pack built in, you can use a program called nlite to make an integrated xp cd with you choice of service pack in it. That way you could do a "clean" xp service pack 2 install without installing the service pack latter. It will also allow you to modify the disk.

It can be found here: http://www.nliteos.com/index.html

If you want to make an integrated service pack cd with just about every hotfix ms has released to date, check this page out: http://ryanvm.msfn.org/

Use nlite to make the integrated service pack disk then use nlite or his utility to do the paks.

You can only integrate the service pack if you have an original xp cd. Now, if you have a existing sp2 xp cd, then you can run Ryan's VM pack.

My goal when I install windows or other software is to have the most bug free version in a clean install. Hooking up an xp machine to some networks unpatched can have your machine infected in minutes.

Since hotfixes and service pack replace so many files on your cd, there is a good chance it will fix the corrputed file.

Now if you have an xp, service pack 1 cd.. you might have some trouble with this.

You can do that with an SP-1 disc as well.
